Q. I have heard that rubbing my eyes can cause macular degeneration later in life. Is that true?
A. There are some diseases of the cornea such as keratoconus that may be exacerbated by rubbing the eyes. Macular degeneration, which is a degeneration of the retina, is not affected by rubbing the eyes.
