Q: What’s your go-to healthy item to order at a Chattanooga restaurant?

A: I love the grilled vegetable salad at Tony’s Pasta. It has grilled summer squash, asparagus, red onions, bell peppers, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, and diced tomatoes over romaine and spring mix, and I order the roasted tomato tarragon dressing on the side. Tony’s has great pasta, but it’s not all about carbs!

Q: What healthy outdoor activities do you do during the spring?

A: I love biking along the Riverwalk. My husband and I start at the Hunter Museum of American Art and go all the way to the Chickamauga Dam. We also love hiking Stringer’s Ridge. There are great greenway spaces  for running, too. The Imagination Station Greenway in Collegedale is one of my favorites.

Q: What’s your go-to exercise routine?

A: I love workouts that combine strength training and cardiovascular conditioning, so I always look for classes that offer plyometrics (jump training) to get my heart rate up along with weight bearing activities to get my muscles working. If there isn’t a class on the day or time I want, I simply pull up a routine on my phone from one of my fitness apps and teach myself!

Q: This issue of HealthScope® highlights area heart disease survivors and their tie to the American Heart Association. How has Go Red for Women affected your life?

A: After my grandmother died suddenly from a cardiovascular event last January, I started reading about Go Red for Women and decided to attend their annual luncheon. That’s where I learned that one in three women in the U.S. will die of heart disease. That statistic is staggering, but something can be done about it. Instead of wondering if my grandmother would still be here if she had recognized her symptoms, I decided to join the effort to help save someone else’s grandmother. I know she would be proud of me.
