What to Know Before You Go
Have you ever had so much pent up stress that you just wanted to punch something? Luckily, there’s an increasingly popular workout that lets you do just that. But what should you know before you go? Read here to find out.
What It Is
Kickboxing is a full-body workout that combines boxing with forms of martial arts (such as karate) and heart-pumping cardio. It has been known to burn nearly 500 calories per hour. During a class, you may do some or all of the following: jump roping, punching, forward kicks, and choreography.
Level of Difficulty
If you’re just easing yourself into exercise and fitness, you’re probably not quite primed for kickboxing yet. People with higher levels of physical fitness will likely feel more at home in the high-intensity workout. However, if you’re lucky, you might find a beginner class to test the waters with. Consider sitting in on a class, talking with instructors, or reading reviews before taking the plunge.
The Takeaway
After a kickboxing class, you should feel rejuvenated and revitalized. The workout is a natural stress buster and can be a great release. Additional benefits of kickboxing include a confidence boost and knowledge of self-defense.
What to Bring
Check with your gym beforehand to see if you’ll need to bring any gear. Often they’ll supply all you’ll need, but you may be asked to bring ankle supports, boxing gloves, or headgear.
How to Prep
About half an hour before your kickboxing class, fuel up on carbohydrates (things like brown rice, potatoes, or beans) to give you the energy you need to make it through the workout. Drink plenty of water beforehand, to stay well hydrated.
The Payoff
If you find yourself going kickboxing regularly, the hard work can definitely pay off. Some of the results include weight reduction, improved coordination, strength building, cardiovascular improvements, self defense, and stress reduction.
