Ask the Doctor: Low Libido

I’ve been suffering from low libido lately. What could be the cause?

Lack of interest in sex, or decreased libido, is the most common sexual problem in women. Generally, a woman’s libido is affected by the emotional tone of her relationship. If her relationship is emotionally fulfilling, she will have more of a desire for sex, so relationship discord is a common cause of low libido. Other causes of low libido include poor communication between partners, stress at home or in the workplace, illness, painful sex, and menopause – the time when women experience a drop in their levels of estrogen and testosterone, two hormones that play a crucial role in sexual desire. A woman in an abusive relationship might also have low libido. Once these issues are addressed and resolved, most women can regain sexual desire and resume a healthy sexual relationship.
