Diving into Dermaplaning

Dubbed the “lunch-hour procedure” for its brevity and ease, dermaplaning is making a splash in the world of beauty. But what exactly is dermaplaning, and can it help you achieve your skincare goals? Here’s what you need to know.

Dermaplaning is a totally safe, non-invasive cosmetic procedure.

A dermaplaning session is performed by a dermatologist or esthetician. Using a small surgical blade, he or she will gently scrape the surface of your facial skin to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. Not only does this provide exfoliation, but it also eliminates unwanted vellus hairs (aka peach fuzz). It’s a quick procedure – a typical session only lasts 30 minutes. Dermaplaning is pain-free and requires no downtime or recovery, although some light redness is possible directly following the procedure.

Dermaplaning has a laundry list of benefits.

One of the best parts of dermaplaning? The results are instant! Immediate benefits include smoother, more youthful-looking skin, a brighter complexion, and of course, no more peach fuzz. Dermaplaning can also help skincare products penetrate deeper and makeup go on easier. These benefits, however, are only temporary, lasting a few weeks.

Over time, dermaplaning can be used as a treatment for certain skin conditions, such as superficial hyperpigmentation and mild acne scarring, and have anti-aging effects – reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Finally, dermaplaning can be combined with other skincare treatments, like chemical peels or laser treatments, to make them more effective.

Dermaplaning is for (almost) everyone.

Most anyone is a candidate for dermaplaning, no matter your age or skin type. Dermaplaning is particularly effective if you have rough or dry skin, or if you have mature skin. It’s also a great option for pregnant women who are avoiding certain products and treatments. On the flip side, those with inflamed acne, numerous raised lesions, or a nickel allergy are not advised to undergo the procedure.

Dermaplaning Dos and Don’ts

DO go to a professional for the best and safest results.

It is your face, after all. Do your research before selecting a licensed and trained professional to perform your dermaplaning session, and ask plenty of questions to address any concerns you may have.

DO reschedule if you experience an acne flare-up or sunburn in the days leading up to the procedure.

Otherwise, you’ll only irritate your skin further – even causing tearing on your skin’s surface.

DO wear sunscreen after your treatment.

Post-treatment, your skin will be more susceptible to the sun’s rays. Avoid direct contact with the sun in the first 48 hours following the procedure, and make sure to apply sunscreen of at least SPF 30 daily!

DON’T schedule back-to-back appointments.

Your skin needs at least 21 days to complete a rejuvenation cycle prior to your next treatment. Scheduling appointments four to six weeks apart is recommended.

DON’T fall for this popular myth.

It’s a wide-spread belief that shaving will cause a woman’s facial hair to grow back thicker. Good news is, dermaplaning (or any hair removal method for that matter) won’t affect how your facial hair grows – that’s determined by genetics.

Whether you’re seeking a new method of hair removal or you want brighter, more radiant skin, dermaplaning could be your answer. Talk to a dermatologist or medical provider to learn more about this quick and easy procedure. HS
