What to Look for in a Work Shoe

Picking the Perfect Pair

Shoes play an important role in protecting foot health, especially in professions like healthcare that involve walking and standing for extended periods of time. Here, we break down what to look for when finding new work shoes to ensure you feel comfortable and supported all day long.

When selecting work shoes, look for these key footwear features:

Arch Support

Supporting the natural curve in the sole of the foot, arch support helps evenly distribute your weight and reduces foot fatigue. Arch support will look different depending on your foot structure:

  • Low arch/flat feet = strong arch support
  • Neutral arch = moderate arch support
  • High arch = extra cushioning

Cushioning

Adequate cushioning in the midsole absorbs the impact of each step, which is crucial when spending hours on your feet, especially on hard surfaces. It also adds comfort and supports proper foot alignment.

Firm Heel Counter

The U-shaped heel counter at the back of the shoe surrounds the heel to provide stability. It should feel rigid to the touch, and your heel should not slip out of the shoe when walking.

Proper Fit

Ill-fitting shoes can cause blisters, calluses, and even long-term damage. If possible, try on different pairs of shoes and take them for a lap. The right shoes should feel secure but not cramped.

Durability

Invest in high-quality, durable materials designed for endurance to increase the life span of your work shoes. The outsole should be strong and provide good traction to keep you steady on your feet.

Roomy Toe Boxes

Narrow toe boxes can cause the toes to become cramped, causing pain and even injury. Instead, look for wide toe boxes that provide space for your toes to rest naturally and move freely.

Sustainability

Closed-toed shoes such as sneakers and clogs are often required to protect feet from workplace hazards. Depending on your profession, you may also want to make sure your shoes are non-slip or water-resistant.

Style

Finding a supportive work shoe doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. Look for shoes in your favorite color or swap out the shoelaces to add pattern or personality.
