How to Be Healthy and Happy at Work

Many of us have an endless to-do list when it comes to our jobs. When life gets hectic and your inbox is bursting at the seams, your health and wellbeing may take a backseat. In this guide, we’ll discuss some simple ways to boost your health and happiness at work.

Health and safety in the workplace

The first step to take when embarking upon a mission to improve health and happiness at work is trying to prevent accidents and injuries. Employers have a duty to implement policies and comply with guidelines to reduce risks, but employees can also play a part. Always ensure you follow the rules and take steps to protect yourself. Make use of safety equipment, wear suitable footwear, look where you are going when walking down the stairs, and raise any concerns with your boss. If you feel like your employer is cutting corners, or you don’t feel safe when doing certain jobs, speak to your manager. If you have an accident as a result of their negligence, look for personal injury attorneys you can rely on. Workplace injuries can affect your physical and mental health, and they can also have a financial impact. It’s crucial to understand that help is available if you feel that your employer is putting you at risk.

Managing your time

Time management is key for workers. We often assume that the longer we work, the more we get done, but this is not always the case. Long hours can actually decrease productivity and efficiency and take their toll on team well-being and morale. Try to schedule regular breaks and manage your time so that you can focus on core tasks and play to your strengths. If you are a morning person, for example, aim to get priority jobs done first thing. Take time to rest and recharge your batteries throughout the day. Walks in the fresh air are an excellent way to increase energy levels and clear your mind. It’s also important to balance work and play. Try to stick to a routine that enables you to switch off and wind down once you log off or leave the office. If you’re doing overtime regularly, or you’re still receiving emails at 10 pm, speak to your boss.

Diet and exercise

A nutritious, balanced diet and regular exercise form the foundations of a healthy lifestyle. It can be challenging to maintain a healthy lifestyle if you have a busy schedule or work tends to take over. The good news is that there are some very simple ways to improve your diet and increase activity levels if you’re short on time. Make lunches the night before, exercise early in the morning or after work, and plan a menu for the week ahead. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine – make time for a daily walk or run, yoga, HIIT, spin, or swim session and take breaks during the day to stretch your legs. Wearing an activity monitor can help to motivate you to walk more, and it can also be beneficial to look for classes that fit in with your schedule. You can visit sports centers close to work or work out at home by joining virtual sessions. Avoid snacking at your desk, stick to three nutritious, hearty meals, and stay hydrated.

Work can take its toll on our physical and mental health. Take these simple tips on board to boost health and wellbeing today.
