Meet Our Doctors – Dr. Mark G. Freeman

Erlanger Orthopaedic Institute

Relieving
Pain & Improving Quality of Life

Between his roles as an attending surgeon, resident surgeon educator, medical director for a large health system, husband of 15 years, and father, Dr. Mark G. Freeman has a pretty full plate. Fortunately, this board-certified surgeon has an extraordinary support system in place. “The goal of taking excellent care of people with compassion and integrity is 100% a team effort,” Dr. Freeman says. “I am only the physician and surgeon I am today because of countless past and present influences starting with God, my family, my mentors, my friends, my colleagues, my staff, my community, and many more.” With a specialization in hip, knee, and shoulder problems, including arthritis, deformity, and infection, Dr. Freeman treats people who are debilitated daily by pain and dysfunction. “Each and every time a patient comes into my office smiling again, walking again, playing sports again – frankly, living their life again – I’m at my happiest professionally,” he shares.

My philosophy is compassion, excellence, and integrity - a mission shared with my colleagues."

1. What sets your practice apart?

First, comprehensive orthopaedic joint care: from simpler primary to complex revision joint replacements, bone loss and infection treatment protocols, deformity correction, and salvage of failed prior surgeries. Additionally, my group has been on the forefront of new surgical techniques and development of the region’s first gold-certified elective orthopaedic surgery program.

2. What do you love most about your profession?

Likely, greater than 95% of our patients have a better quality of life and level of happiness after treatment. This makes an already rewarding position as a physician even better as a joint replacement surgeon.

3. What do you see as the most exciting new development for your profession?

Less invasive surgical techniques, cutting-edge technology, newer implant options, and a team approach to care all resulting in better short-term recovery and better long-term success.

4. What is your best advice for patients?

Do not live with pain or poor quality of life without an evaluation by a trusted physician. Expect and demand to be educated about your condition and alternative treatment options, but seek a second opinion if there are concerns.

5. What would you consider to be your main strengths?

Demanding high quality and attention to detail of everything and everyone, but attempting to hold myself to an even higher standard.
