If you’ve been dreaming of a new ‘do, it’s time to take the plunge (or rather, the chop).
But which hairstyle will supply you with endless confidence and fabulous hair days? We spoke with Mark Copeland, artistic director at Hair Benders Internationalé, for the 411 on four popular cuts that will have you looking and feeling your best all summer long.
The Lob
The lob, or long bob, is the perfect compromise for anyone wanting shorter hair (but isn’t ready to fully commit). It’s super versatile, low-maintenance, and best of all, you can still pull your hair into a ponytail. Copeland especially loves the lob for oval, heart, and square-shaped faces. “Medium to thick hair works better with this style, although the lob is known to be universally flattering,” he shares. “You can ask your hairdresser to leave it a little angled in the front for a stylish finish.”
The Pixie
Ditch your long tresses in favor of a bold, yet feminine, pixie cut, and you’ll see why this style has remained a timeless favorite! This varied hairstyle can incorporate layers, shaved sides, long or choppy bangs, and asymmetrical elements for a truly unique look – just be prepared for routine maintenance. Copeland recommends the pixie cut for anyone with an oval-shaped face and great cheekbones. He adds, “While fine to medium hair works best, thicker hair can rock this style if it’s cut especially short.”
The Bob
Bobs are sleek, sophisticated, and summer-approved: This cut is long enough to style (both wavy and straight locks look lovely), and short enough to keep your hair off your neck. “The classic bob is flattering on an oval and heart-shaped face. Or, an angled bob – which is shorter in the back and longer in the front – works well for a square-shaped face,” Copeland explains. “A true bob is one length and sits at chin-length or higher, but they can also be layered and have bangs.”
The Shag
Slightly edgy with a touch of sweet, the shag hairstyle is known for its texture and choppy ends – giving you an effortless, carefree summer look. “A shag is a great cut for someone with an oblong face shape,” Copeland says. “The texture from the layers helps to give width to the face.” While bangs are optional, they really work with this hairstyle, whether in a blunt cut or long and side-swept. And styling options for the shag are limitless; this is not a one-size-fits-all look!
