Brows that Wow!

Finding Your Brow Shape

You don’t have to make a trip to the salon to get perfectly symmetrical brows. We’ve gathered the best tips on how to shape, pluck, trim, and wax your brows all from the comfort of your own bathroom mirror.

Your eyebrows frame your face, so getting them in tip-top shape is important. First on the list: choosing the right mirror. You may be tempted to grab the most magnifying one you can find, but proceed with caution. Too much magnification can lead to over plucking, so choose your mirror wisely and take a frequent step back to check each brow’s balance and symmetry.

To keep your eyebrows’ natural shape, use a brow pencil to draw a line along the bottom of your brow. Any stray hairs that fall below the line can be plucked or waxed. If you want an arch, mark the spot on your brow bone directly above your iris. Remove any strays below that mark.

If plucking just won’t get the job done, buy an at-home waxing kit. Cleanse your face first, then lightly dust powder near the brows. Make sure to apply an even layer of wax in the direction of hair growth, then cover with a wax strip which you’ll remove in the opposite direction of hair growth. Apply pressure to your skin afterward to relieve the sting.

Next, work on eliminating any trace of a unibrow. To keep from creating a large gap, place a pencil vertically on the outer edge of your nose. Do this on both sides of your nose, and make sure not to pluck or wax past what falls in between.

If your brows are thin, you may want to color in any gaps with a brow pencil. Go for a color that is a few shades lighter than your hair, so your brows will still stand out. For a natural look, make sure to only draw on your brows, not outside. Use light strokes in a swift, upward motion to keep it looking natural.

On the other hand, if you’re lucky enough to have super-full brows, you may need to polish them up by trimming some of the excess length. Do this by combing your brows upward and snipping any hairs that are noticeably longer. Still have unruly strays? Use a clear brow gel when applying makeup to keep each hair perfectly in place.

Over-Plucked Emergency

Thin brows are no longer en vogue, but accidental over-plucking still happens. If tweezing goes too far. Don’t panic. Add extra protein like eggs, beans, and lean red meat into your diet to make hair grow quicker. Also, gently exfoliate the brow area to stimulate hair growth. In the meantime, fill in any gaps with a brow pencil and take a break from tweezing until your brows grow back.
