Ask the Doctor: Basketball Injuries

Q: What are the most common injuries in basketball and how can my son prevent them this season?

A: According to a recent study, almost half of all basketball injuries occur to the ankle or foot, with half of these injuries being
sprains of the ligaments about the ankle. Basketball is the highest risk sport for ankle injuries, but the good news is, use of ankle braces can greatly decrease the severity of these injuries. Knee injuries are fairly common in basketball too, with sprains to the knee’s ligaments being the most common of all. A good pre-season conditioning program can be helpful in preventing these injuries – over half of all injuries occur in the second half of games, highlighting the need for strength and endurance training to prevent fatigue. Boys are more likely to be injured than girls, so if he does get injured, call us! We are here to help and will work to get him back to play as quickly and as safely as possible.
