What is the 3Shape Trios® Intraoral Scanner?

Used by dentists and periodontists, the 3Shape Trios® Intraoral Scanner is a wireless, handheld imaging device that creates precise, digital 3-D images of your teeth and gums — thousands a second! The color images can be combined to generate a complete 3-D model of your teeth in minutes.

Why You Might Need 3-D Dental Models

A 3-D model is a necessary first step for correcting a number of dental issues. For treatment involving crowns, implants, and bridges, dental models are used to create replacement prosthetics that fit accurately, look natural, and match the patient’s alignment and bite.

How the 3Shape Trios® Intraoral Scanner Works

The scanner wand is rotated throughout the patient’s mouth and captures every intricacy of his or her teeth in a series of natural color photos. After scanning, the photos are sent to a computer that merges them to develop a full 3-D model. That model is then sent to the lab where a prosthetic can be created. An integrated anti-mist heater allows for clear, undistorted images by ensuring optimal scan temperature.

Benefits of Digital Scanning

Before the availability of digital scanning, dental impressions were the only option for creating dental models. Impressions are made using a heavy molding paste that must be applied wet, and remain on teeth until hardened. The paste is often associated with an unpleasant taste and can slightly hinder a patient’s ability to breathe and swallow naturally throughout the process. With the 3Shape Trios® Intraoral Scanner, there is little to no discomfort during the digital scan.

The scanner also produces highly detailed images of the teeth, which helps a dentist or periodontist identify any additional prep work needed before creating and applying a new prosthetic.

Lastly, because the scanner is fast and accurate, the entire process – from digital model to prosthetic application – can be completed in a single visit.
