Dealing With Infertility

Infertility is never easy for any couple to deal with. It can bring a lot of pain and confusion. A couple is considered infertile if they have been trying for a year to get pregnant, and have not succeeded. For conception to take place, a specific sequence of events must occur.

First, a woman’s body releases an egg from her ovary. The egg then goes through her fallopian tube and then into her womb. The sperm will then need to fertilize the egg. After that, the fertilized egg must become attached to the wall of the uterus. This is called implantation.

As you can see, there are a number of things that need to happen for someone to actually get pregnant. Unfortunately, even if just one step is missed, a couple won’t conceive.

Causes of infertility in Men

Infertility was once thought to be a woman’s problem. However, today we know better. Both men and women can struggle with conceiving. There are quite a number of reasons why a man may be infertile, but a major factor is that he may not have enough sperm and/or they might swim too slowly.

Infertility in men may be exacerbated by smoking, age, alcohol use, and hormonal problems.

Causes of Infertility in Women

Infertility in women is caused mainly when there are problems with ovulation. When ovulation does not take place, there are no eggs released to be fertilized. One of the main signs that a woman is having trouble with ovulation is when she does not have a menstrual period, or has them infrequently.

If there is a problem with a woman’s uterus or any other part of her reproductive system, which can be caused by conditions such as endometriosis or PCOS, she may not be able to conceive. Infertility in women can also be caused by age, stress, hormonal problems, smoking, and alcohol use.

Identifying Fertility Problems

If a couple is having trouble becoming pregnant, their doctor will do a series of physical examinations. In most cases, doctors begin by testing semen. The doctor will take a look at the number of sperm produced and see if they present in a healthy and typical fashion.

Doctors will do ovulation checks on women by doing blood tests, and they may also do an ultrasound of a woman’s ovaries to examine them for abnormalities.

Treating Infertility

Infertility can be treated in many ways. One of the most prevalent ways that doctors might suggest is in vitro fertilization. However, this option is normally only put forward after many other less invasive and less involved things have been done to try to get a couple to conceive. For example, antibiotics may be given if there is an infection that is affecting sperm count. In women, doctors might treat infertility by prescribing a medication that can help her ovulate.

Patience is Key

Having to cope with infertility problems can take an emotional toll on a couple. It is important to remember that when you have fertility problems, treatment requires patience. It also requires communication between the partners and their doctor. If you keep these things in mind, it’ll be easier to determine what the problem is, and work toward an effective treatment plan.
